Position Description - Finance and Operations Manager


The Institute for Educational Leadership’s (IEL) is a not-for-profit organization. IEL’s mission is to equip leaders to work together across boundaries to build effective systems that prepare children, youth and families for postsecondary education, careers, and citizenship.  With an annual budget of 9 million, IEL is seeking a Finance and Operations Manager to support the organization in its continued growth.

Basic Functions

Responsible for providing high-level assistance to the Director of Finance in performing full-service accounting and in the overall financial management of our mid-sized national not-for-profit organization.  The incumbent reports to the Director of Finance and HT.

Financial Management (80%)

  • Provide support to Director of Finance and HR and the President in the preparation of the annual budget and monitor actual expenditures and revenues during the fiscal year;
  • Prepare vouchers, invoices, checks, account statements, reports and other records and reviews them for accuracy;
  • Act as a resource on finance policies and procedures to program staff including assisting program staff with budget modifications;
  • Manage data entry for financial and procurement transactions in QuickBooks to ensure timely payment of invoices;
  • Maintains accurate documentation and records for all grants and contracts awarded;
  • Handle vendor inquiries related to accounts payable and accounts receivable.
  • Analyze financial data, reconciles, verifies and reports information to the Director of Finance, the President, and senior managers;
  • Provide support for the organization’s yearly independent audit and work closely with the auditors and Director of Finance to ensure implementation of recommendations from the audit;
  • Assist in the preparation of IRS 1099 reporting and related form preparation.
  • Provide support to the Director of Finance in the recording of financial activity within the organization’s general ledger, processing and depositing of funds received, payroll management, the annual audit, and the monthly reconciliation of account balances.

Operational (20%)

  • Assist with the modernization of data infrastructure and administrative systems.
  • Completes special reports and process improvement projects as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting or related field, at least three years of professional experience in accounting or bookkeeping, or demonstrated mastery of core finance and accounting competencies is required.
  • Working knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and QuickBooks Desktop or similar accounting software.
  • High level of personal responsibility and extraordinary attention to detail.Excellent interpersonal skills, aptitude for working with a wide range of individuals, and strong collaborative teamwork and problem solving skills.
  • Cultural competence including the ability to function well in multicultural environments


$65,000 - $85,000, dependent upon experience.
