Leilah joined IEL in 2019 as the director of communications. She brings with her 10 years of experience working to advance social, economic, and educational justice.
Prior to IEL, Leilah served as assistant director of communications at the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). While at the AFT, Leilah led member communications across AFT’s online platforms and managed strategic campaigns for the union’s public education division. Over six years at the AFT, Leilah helped the organization center member voices in all of its communications work and helped local unions build their communications capacity.
Leilah also previously served as senior digital communications specialist for the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, where she managed the organization’s social media accounts, websites, and blog and launched the union’s first-ever smartphone app and mobile website.
Leilah is a proud graduate of Cincinnati’s School for Creative and Performing Arts, a nationally renowned public K-12 arts school. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Barnard College, where she majored in French and Francophone studies and served the community as a writing fellow.
